60 Years of UK Transmission Electron Microscopy

Wednesday 29th September 2004, 10.00 - 16.30

A tranmission electron microscope (TEM) from the 1940s 2004 marks the 60th anniversary of the arrival of the first five electron microscopes in the UK , sent under the Lend-Lease Agreement from the USA in 1944. One of these first microscopes went to Rothamsted Research, where it was used to study the structure of plant viruses.

To celebrate this event and to mark some of the contributions that transmission electron microscopy has made in the life and physical sciences, a one day meeting has been organised at Rothamsted Research in collaboration with the Royal Microscopical Society and other laboratories that received those first RCA TEMs.

The event will include presentations and posters from the early developments in transmission electron microscopy through to the microscopy at the leading edge of today's biological and materials science.

Key contributors include Prof. H Sitte, Mr Alan Agar, Dr Angus Kirkland and Prof. Bob Horne amongest others.

To attend, or for further details, contact Sam Irving at Rothamsted Research on 01582 763133 ext. 2908 or email sam.irving@bbsrc.ac.uk. The cost will be £30 including lunch and refreshments.
