Rothamsted Research (RRes) was founded in 1843, and is the oldest active agricultural research station in the world. It currently operates on two sites: Rothamsted, in Harpenden, Hertfordshire and Broom's Barn, near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Over the last 30 years, RRes and its progenitors have provided the primary vehicle through which the UK government has engaged in fundamental and strategic research of benefit to crop-based agriculture and its interactions with the wider environment, both nationally and internationally. This short paper highlights just a few of the many achievements of the recent past, and points to areas where continuing research investment is likely to yield significant economic and societal benefit in the future.
