Notice: Although I am no longer employed by Rothamsted Research, I still have an office and e-mail account and will be continuing my collaboration with Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. This will include maintaining an interest in plant virus taxonomy and sequence analysis.
For some years I tested barley samples for mosaic virus as part of a long-running survey. I regret that we can no longer receive samples on this basis. However, Dr Kostya Kanyuka is still keen to obtain resistant barley or any wheat samples that may be infected with soil-borne viruses.

Old research programme (until April 2006)

Some pictures related to the barley mosaic viruses

The barley mosaic viruses are usually first noticed in the winter or early spring as yellow patches in the crop. This field had a mixture of both Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) and Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV).
The typical mosaic symptoms on the younger leaves are shown in this picture.
Barley mosaic viruses can be effectively controlled using resistant varieties as this photograph from a BaYMV trial in Gloucestershire, UK, shows dramatically.
Composite aerial photograph of the same trial taken by Dr Vick Jordan using a model aeroplane.
By flowering, symptoms of the mosaic viruses are usually difficult to find but crops can remain stunted as this picture illustrates. Severe infection by the mosaic viruses can result in yield losses of 30% or more.
Light micrograph of a typical, irregularly lobed, zoosporangium of Polymyxa graminis in a barley root cell (stained with trypan blue).
Light- and electron- micrographs showing the resting spore clusters ("cystosori") of Polymyxa graminis.

DPV Web
This site contains a virtually complete on-line version of the DPV program and much more. In addition to the individual virus descriptions, there is extensive taxonomic coverage (all viruses except those with a double-stranded DNA genome), classified lists of plant virus sequences and a new sequence database and software for rapid access to viral gene sequences and subsequent analyses. Details of the stand-alone CD-ROM version marketed by AAB can also be found on this site.
