| The Broadbalk Experiment on Rothamsted Farm |
The Rothamsted Farms cover 400ha, 280 ha of which are in arable production. The farms are split into two main areas with some 80 hectares of mainly light Cottenham sand at Woburn. The remainder being at Rothamsted where the main soil types are flinty loams on clay-with-flints and/or chalk.
A wide range of trials are carried out on the farms including a large array of biodiversity studies, environmental monitoring and sustainable food production work.
There is a 77 ha experimental farm with irrigation and plot covering tunnels for drought tolerance experiments. There are specialist facilities for field studies of pests and diseases.
The Institute has a fully resourced research farm with a skilled workforce and extensive facilities. The land area extends to 250 ha, the majority of which is poorly drained Culm measure clays principally of the Hallsworth and Halstow series.
